Surgical Treatment for Hemorrhoids
According to a new study, the most effective treatment for severe hemorrhoids is surgical removal. Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Inc. of Johnson and Johnson Medical Philippines has developed this new technique specifically designed for the permanent treatment of prolapse and hemorrhoids. Called the ‘Procedure for Prolapse and Hemorrhoids (PPH)’ that uses the Hemorrhoidal Circular Stapler, this surgical process is touted as one of the most effective surgical treatments for hemorrhoids.
PPH is considered faster, safer and easier than the conventional surgical procedure for prolapse and hemorrhoids. This 20-minute procedure also spells L-E-S-S for the patients as compared to conventional surgery. Meaning less pain and less expense, especially since the patient is released at an earlier date sometimes, even right after surgery.
The Procedure for Prolapse and Hemorrhoids is a safe and effective therapy that should be considered the gold standard for the treatment of prolapsed hemorrhoids. Although the Procedure for Prolapse and Hemorrhoids (PPH) is used worldwide, little is known about the durability of the technique.
PPH, also known as stapled hemorrhoidopexy, uses a circular stapler that is placed in the anus through an anoscope. PPH does not excise the hemorrhoids but instead repositions the prolapsed rectal mucosa in the anal canal. This puts the hemorrhoids back to an internal position higher up in the anal canal and reduces blood flow to the hemorrhoids. The internal hemorrhoids typically then shrink within 4-6 weeks.
During 1996-1998, Dr. Stuto and his colleague performed PPH on 100 consecutive patients with varying degrees of prolapse. Both colorectal surgeons learned the procedure from its inventor, Dr. Antonio Longo of the department of coloproctology and pelvic diseases at St. Elisabeth Hospital in Vienna.
In their commitment to giving patients the best care, EES has teamed up with world-renowned doctors and hospitals to develop procedures and products for minimally invasive surgery.
The tests conducted on patients who received PPH had significantly fewer early complications than other surgical procedures. Late complications are not significantly different between PPH and other surgical procedures but patients who received PPH had significantly fewer functional deficits than those who received other surgical options like the Milligan-Morgan procedure.
There are many alternatives to the routine surgical treatment for hemorrhoids. However, surgery can sometimes be the most appropriate treatment. It is not something people look forward to with pleasure, but it is not unbearable torture either.
